To The Earth (Volume II, Hibernal)

by James Keyes

/
1.
Every blade of grass is an ancestor coming back as One more set of hands raised towards the sky So may we all look back with our rose colored glasses And to tomorrow too, baby come what may Well I'm tired of your voices and all your talk of choices I've heard enough to know you don't want me So one more time with feeling, make everyone believe in The things you do and say and teach to all We don't need reassuring, our confidence is growing With every little step along the way We no longer need to go down the only road we've ever know All roads lead to Rome no more Oh the boatman takes one more, no empty ships upon his shore He just wants your last two pennies for the ride But when you come back across the water, You'll be no ones son or daughter Till you find a way to make right by everyone
2.
I drink my tea in the evening when the coyotes sing And the will-o'-the-whisp draws you near Hard like the ground but you're soft like the rain For what you listen you will hear So I fill my glass with brandy and I fill my heart with love Fill the air up full of song as below as above And I fill my lungs with laughter and I hope you fill yours too And we can love and we can laugh before the day comes anew The stars look like diamond rings on the fingers of the trees Blow your kisses in the wind The rain brings them down like acorns from above Everything old begins again
3.
Keep on rolling keep on scrolling This endless machine is prepared to do as you please Will you go out the way you came in There's more blood on the lamb now than there ever has been Take the wheel I want to let go I don't feel anymore Drift away in smoke green rivers Wash away to the sea Keep on praying keep on slaying The difference between shadow and shade has all faded away Love grief and money cannot be concealed Pleasure will pass but sorrow will always remain
4.
The Apple 02:52
I eat the apple but the doctor, he still comes I drink my water from an endless cup of love You've got to find a little magic in the world The ashes of what I used to burn have all turned into gold You want your savior, he's got a plan You want your savior but all you've got is man Swim like Odysseus into the setting sun There are two hay thieves in the field who move as one You breath out to the world and she will breath you in Tell me where you want to be and I will let you in So take me tripping slipping through the backbeat of your heart You don't know what love is 'till you start

about

To The Earth is James Keyes' 4th album and unlike the previous three, will be digital only and released exclusively on Bandcamp.

"Since we're not bound by physical releases or time anymore I thought it would be fun to create a living album" says Keyes. To The Earth will be released in four parts, four songs each on solstices and equinoxes over the course of one year.

September 22, 2016 - Volume 1, Autumnal
December 21, 2016 - Volume 2, Hibernal
March 20, 2017 - Volume 3, Vernal
June 21, 2017 - Volume 4, Estival

Like the title indicates, To The Earth finds Keyes getting back to his roots. Literally. Recorded in his barn theses new songs have a rustic dream-like quality to them and are all connected to the seasons, the earth and the world around him. Having moved from the city to the country after his last release, 2013's The Middle, this new batch of songs is inspired by the cycles of life found in nature. Time, life, death and rebirth are all reoccurring themes in the lyrics.

Curious yet?
